Manager Features Available to Staff Users and New Section Editor Options

Tuesday, December 27

by SOCS Support

November 30, 2011

If you attended a User Group Event within the last year you heard about the updates underway to User Levels within the Central Services.  In case we didn't have a meeting in your area or you were unable to attend we wanted to share the information regarding the upcoming modifications being implemented on Tuesday, December 27 as well as our next phase of this project scheduled for early 2012.

Manager features will be available to Staff Users

We have received requests to split out the Manager features allowing site champions to delegate Manager privileges while maintaining control over which privileges to assign to users.

How does this benefit you?

Site champions can now give users access to individual privileges that were previously combined within the Manager Menu. For example, you could now give a user access to Features without also giving them access to Sections or any other privilege contained in the Manager Menu.

Changes to Central Services

There will no longer be a Manager option within the navigation of the Central Services. Features, Polls, Sections, Banners (renamed to HTML Banners), Feedback, Bios, and Clear My Cache (renamed to Clear Site Cache) will be their own separate user privileges.

How will this affect you?

If you are currently a Manager, you will no longer see Manager listed on the left-hand navigation of the Central Services. You will see the individual options listed within the navigation.

If you are not currently a Manager, you will see no change in Central Services.

New Section Editor Options

We have received requests to add the option to have Section Editors who can Edit ALL articles within the section rather than only being able to edit their own articles.

How does this benefit you?

By implementing this option, Section Editors may share articles without re-assigning them to each other.

For example, a school may have 3 second grade teachers share a second grade homepage article.

How will this affect you?

If you are currently a Section Editor, after the update on Tuesday, December 27, you may request your site champion or a staff member who has access to edit your User profile, to provide you with access to edit any article. After this change has been made you will be able to edit articles you created plus articles other staff members have created within the sections you have access to.

If you are not currently a Section Editor, you will see no change in Central Services.

What's next?

Section Based Privileges

All user access privileges will be section based rather than privilege based. You will assign users to sections and then select user access privileges that will correspond to those sections.

For example, you could set up the high school principal with access to all High School sections and select Buttons, Banners, and Sections. The principal would only be able to create Buttons, Banners, and Sections for the High School sections to which he has access.
